If I were to spend three hours a day fixing cars would I not end up becoming a good mechanic? If for three hours I spent my time painting would I not become a good artist? If I spent three hours a day doing my homework and reading would I not become an excellent student? So why would you say that killing cops, robbing cars, dealing drugs, pimping women, and vandalizing property in a virtual world not produce a better one in real life? Police officers use video game technology to train for real life, how is your child smashing a women’s head in with a baseball bat preparing them for real life? These kids may not go out and rob a bank or kill their teacher, but it is forming a cosmology within there universe. They love playing GTA because “they get to do stuff they can’t do in real life.” Well what is going to happen when they turn 17 (the age you should be to start playing these games) and you have been bored of killing people in a virtual world for many years? What we feed into our kids now will evidently shape our kids future.

Your absolutely right. I wonder how the video game players would feel if the victims in the game were more like them.
On the other hand, it is a fantasy game. Children like to do things they are not allowed to do to get a rise out of adults, parents. Re: Re: Grand Theft Auto

Ever seen American Idol? There are people who practice singing for years but it doesn't mean they'll become better singers... If I had aspirations of becoming a police officer, what is wrong with me playing the role of a cop and taking down drug dealers in a video game?
I've been playing games ever since Mario on the original Nintendo. Played games throughout my childhood and still occasionally do. Yet, I've still managed to get a full scholarship to a University in another city in which not only my tuition is covered, but food and rent as well. Re: Re: Re: Grand Theft Auto

I think GTA is a good example of exaggerated social critique. People call it violent, but it's just art imitating life (and greatly exaggerating it). Because the player is given so much freedom, that exageration potentially becomes even greater. The fact that it has become successful just reinforces the idea that people have violent impulses.
Also, the game is only as violent as the person playing it, to some degree. I think that's what this video is making fun of. Re: Re: Re: Grand Theft Auto
No doubt GTA is a controversial game but I wouldn't want us to exaggerate either. Kids that play GTA are not a danger for the society, they play just for fun. I played it myself and I didn't turn into a violent person. I admit though that gaming industry should be more cautious about the educational impact games can have on kids.

I have a 17 yr old son and I just wish he would put more effort into doing his homework than in playing online games period. I bought the computer and put the Internet on it to help him with his homework not for him to game all night long. So in my opinion online gaming for long hours can be a real problem with some teens with regards to doing their homework. My question as a parent of a online gamer who games more than does his homework what can I do to the computer to mechanically put a time limit on his gaming and yet still have the Internet open for homework? Is there something that I can do to the computer to get the online gaming off at a certain time but keep the rest of the Internet on so that he can only use it to look up things for his homework? Is Microsoft listening!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Re: Re: Grand Theft Auto

Be a parent and do just that! Stop using excuses for poor parenting. Take the video games away from him. It's that simple

I enjoyed how you perverse the facts to support your point.
If you spend hours playing video games you will be a better video game player. I play tennis online for 6-8 hours sometimes and I tell you what in real life I can not perform a serve or volley. I have been playing games since I was in the 2nd grade. I am a college graduate with 2 degrees, the first being in marketing and the second in computer information systems. I purchased my first home at the age of 22 and is currently training for the Fire Department in my area. My first car was purchased with cash and I keep my credit card under control. I own over 300 games and I have no intent on slowing down. Video games really ruined my life... WOE IS ME! Re: Grand Theft Auto: Regent Park
I don't even know why there is a dispute between people who believe video games are influencing in a bad matter children and people who don't believe that. It's foolish. Every child is exposed in one way or another to at least one bad influence. You can blame your incapability of being a good parent on all sorts of things: anturage, video games, TV, school violence, etc. The child is going to end up "bad" only if you as a parent allow it.

Too bad the video isn't up any longer, I wanted to call my son and ask him to watch it. Don't know what else to do, he plays his games all day long and I hear sounds as if someone is stabbing someone else.
